Options Program

The Options program provides an alternative to regular education in a traditional classroom setting. This option is for students who wish to pursue a Louisiana Equivalency Diploma, a skills certificate, or both.

GED Academic Rigor

Students pursuing a GED will be instructed and tested in 5 subject  areas: Writing (grammar & essay), Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Instruction includes:

» One-One Instruction
» Practice Tests

Skills Certificate

The students attend half a day in a classroom setting and half a day in a community work place setting. Students can receive a Skill Certificate once they complete 480 hours in the classroom and 480 hours in their skill area.

Qualifications

» A student must be 16 years of age or older or will turn 16 before the end of the year and meet one or more of the following criteria:
» Student has shown that he can probably pass the GED Test
» Student has shown that he is capable of working independently in a competitive job market
» Student has 5 or less Carnegie Units at age 17, 10 or less Carnegie Units at age 18, or 15 or less Carnegie units at age 19.
» The student is 2 or more grade levels behind his peers

» Student has not passed 8th grade ELA or Math LEAP
» Student has not passed a portion of GEE
» Student participated in alternate assessment
» Student has limited English language proficiency

Things to Know

» The program is voluntary
» Parental/Guardian consent is required
» Students have the option to re-entry into regular diploma program
» All students receive services in 3 program components: academic, career readiness, and counseling 
» Counseling services include: personal, academic, skills/workplace readiness, and career
» Students can choose their teachers
» Class sizes are small

Guidelines for Options Completion

» Must be at least 17 years of age OR, if entering the program from 8th grade or under, must have been in the program for at least 2 years
» Must have successfully completed at least the equivalent of two (2) Carnegie units per year of instruction in a chosen skill area
» Must have met all criteria for specific skills courses (i.e., LCTCS, local criteria)
» Must have successfully completed a work ethics curriculum either as a locally developed stand-alone course or through integration in a skill course ( i.e., the JAG Model Option Program, Work Habits, New Orleans Job Institute – NOJI)
